Substation Relocation

Ocean Terminal

Location

Edinburgh

Value

1.2 million

As part of Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre’s £100m transformation project, the existing site was extensively remodelled, which led to a redundant facility being removed to accommodate a new residential development. To facilitate this, two high voltage substations needed to be relocated, and the electrical system had to be updated to accommodate a change in the layout of the shopping centre.

The project required a survey of the complete system that was feeding the two substations which were being moved. Extensive work was carried out to prepare the new substation, including the design and planning of elements such as base, housing, penetrations, and containment. To minimise the impact of outages to the shopping centre, we also detailed plans to swap supplies from the old substation to the new one, whilst still using the existing switchgear by utilising some temporary switchgear.

Relocation of two HV substations • Rectification of electrical systems • Complete system survey • Preparation of new substation • Design and full detailing of substation base, housing, penetrations, and containment

The job was carried out adjacent to a live retail and leisure facility – in addition to local residents using Ocean Terminal’s shops, restaurants, and leisure facilities, hundreds of tourists visit Ocean Terminal each day to see The Royal Yacht Britannia, making this an especially busy site. As such, great care was taken in the planning of our logistics, site set-up, and traffic management planning to ensure everyone’s safety and to reduce the potential of power outages within the centre.
