Victoria Quarter is a restored Victorian shopping arcade in the heart of Leeds. Our task was to upgrade the main distribution boards supplying various areas of the arcade including lighting and power. We also needed to replace the armoured cables which supplied the distribution boards. As the mall would be open throughout the project period, site safety and ensuring continuation of power to the building was important. Retailers had to be informed of works at least one week in advance, and we held daily meetings with the Facilities Manager to ensure that we were aware of any issues or concerns as they arose.
The project was delivered via a design and build contract, and we carried out extensive validation and tracing surveys during the mobilisation period, so that all services were identified. In order to be able to carry out a straight changeover of boards, we installed new sub main cables for the distribution boards. Once the changeover was complete, we carried out final testing and labelling of the new installations.
Works include
Upgrading main distribution boards • Replacing armoured cables • Working in a busy live retail environment • Validation and tracing surveys • Liaison with Facility Manager and on-site retailers • Traffic management and planning
As this was a live site, not only was safety a key concern, but as the mall would be open throughout, power disruptions were not an option. This meant that careful planning was required, and we had to ensure that everything was in place for a straight changeover of boards. The external elements of the job were equally complex as they were carried out in the middle of a live traffic intersection, as such we carried out detailed traffic management and planning before beginning work.
