We worked at Darlington Memorial Hospital to successfully deliver three major projects – the refurbishments of the maternity theatre, paediatric unit, and same day emergency care (SDEC) unit. The works involved everything from asbestos removal to the creation of new theatres including the installation of extensive services, specialist, and bespoke theatre equipment.
The complex nature of the work meant that extensive mechanical and electrical installations were required. These included power, data, lighting, fire alarms, BMS, HVAC, security and access control, nurse call, IPS and UPS, panic alarm, medical gas trunking, AGSS pump and pipework, drainage, AHU and LPHW heating within the plant room to feed the new AHU. Due to the design and layout of the building, we used a crane lift to install the steel structure and AHU on the roof. This required careful planning and extensive liaison with the client and key stakeholders.
Works include
Fitout • Construction • M&E services • Asbestos removal • Plastering • Decoration • Flooring, ceilings, doors • Fire protection and insulation
All three projects were carried out in a live hospital environment, so we had to not only ensure that disruption for staff and patients was kept to a minimum but, crucially, that we adhered to hospital infection control measures. This involved using a combination of dust cubes, water misting, and sealing off wall, floor, soffit, and service penetration points to avoid dust and debris contaminating live areas. We also used negative pressure chambers at all access points, extracted air was ducted along the ceiling void, and all waste materials were carefully sealed and disinfected prior to removal.
