For Beth Tinsley, quantity surveying wasn’t part of a lifelong plan but sometimes the best careers begin with an open mind and the right environment. Ten years after joining Morris & Spottiswood, Beth has grown from an administrative apprentice to a qualified Quantity Surveyor in the company’s Warrington office, delivering high-value projects across the financial sector.
Her journey is a reflection of what we mean when we say our people are our strength, because when people are supported to grow, they don’t just build their own careers, they help build the business too.
From Curiosity to Career
When Beth left college in 2015, she wasn’t entirely sure what direction she wanted to take. She decided to defer her university place and gain some practical experience, a choice that would ultimately shape her future.
“I applied for an administrative role at Morris & Spottiswood.” Beth explains. “Working in that environment gave me firsthand exposure to the construction industry and helped me understand the many different roles involved in delivering a project. I found myself particularly drawn to quantity surveying, seeing the work of other surveyors up close really sparked my interest and inspired me to pursue it.”
That early spark led Beth to set her sights on a long-term career within the company, one built on learning, development and continuous growth.
Supported Every Step of the Way
From her first day, Beth says she’s always felt supported. The Morris & Spottiswood Group has invested in her development at every stage, sponsoring her qualifications from an Administrative Apprenticeship and an HNC in the Built Environment through to a Degree in Quantity Surveying.
“The company’s support has been incredible,” she says. “They’ve not only provided financial backing but also given me the space and flexibility to gain practical experience alongside my studies. That combination has been invaluable. It’s allowed me to apply what I’ve learned to real-world situations and grow my confidence as a professional.”
Life as a Quantity Surveyor
Today, Beth works predominantly with financial sector clients, helping to deliver fast-paced fit-out and fabric maintenance projects. Her role is a balance of numbers, strategy, and collaboration, and no two days are ever quite the same.
“A typical day involves pricing projects, cost planning, reviewing contractor applications, assessing variations and preparing monthly valuations,” she explains. “It’s a role that keeps me on my toes, but it’s also one where I’m constantly learning, which is one of the things I enjoy the most.”
That sense of variety and challenge has kept Beth engaged throughout her decade at the company, but so too has the team around her.
A Team That Lifts Each Other Up
Beth describes our culture as collaborative, supportive, and grounded in teamwork. A culture that values people as much as performance.
“The approach here really promotes a One Team mindset,” she says. “Everyone supports one another and works together to get the job done. There’s a great balance between professionalism and having fun, we know how to keep things light, and that makes coming to work enjoyable.”
Having been with the company for ten years this October, Beth says it’s the people and opportunities that have made her career so rewarding. “It’s a company where you want to stay and grow,” she adds.
Balancing Life, Study and Work
That growth hasn’t come without challenges. One of Beth’s proudest achievements, completing her degree with first-class honours, also came during one of her busiest times, balancing full-time work, part-time study and motherhood.
“It was tough,” she admits. “There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but I learned to prioritise, ask for help, and keep sight of the bigger picture. Achieving that degree while managing everything else was one of the hardest but most rewarding things I’ve done.”
Through that experience, she learned an important lesson that continues to shape her approach today.
“Understanding the theory behind quantity surveying is important, but applying it to real projects is what deepens your expertise. Combining education with experience is where the real growth happens.”
Looking Ahead and Inspiring Others
Beth’s story is not just about professional growth, but personal fulfilment, and she hopes it might inspire others, especially women, to consider a career in quantity surveying.
“Quantity surveying isn’t just about numbers,” she says. “It’s about communication, negotiation, and problem-solving. The industry is changing, and we absolutely need more female professionals, as having diverse perspective and skills is invaluable.”
Her advice for anyone joining the Morris & Spottiswood Group? Be open, be adaptable, and be ready to contribute.
“This is a company that recognises effort and invests in its people. If you’re eager to learn and willing to get stuck in, the opportunities are there.”
Beth’s career is a testament to what’s possible when ambition meets opportunity, and when an organisation truly invests in its people.
Our people are our strength.
