Making Time for What Matters: Why We Are Creating our own Social Value Week

True social value does not happen by accident. It is created through the time we invest, the conversations we have, and the actions we take together.

In a fast-paced industry like ours, where programmes, deadlines, and delivery pressures are part of everyday life, it is important to make time to reflect on the wider impact we can create.

That is why we have created our very own Social Value Week — a dedicated opportunity to pause, celebrate the positive difference already being made, and encourage everyone across our business, our supply chain, and our communities to play their part in creating lasting value.

Earlier in the summer, we launched an ambitious programme of community volunteering across of our nine of our office locations. Working with a local organisation near to each office, we identified opportunities to invest our time, skills and teamwork into supporting these vital community assets. Through these activities, our teams came together to deliver meaningful improvements, strengthening local partnerships and creating a lasting impact across the communities we are part of.

Social Value Starts with All of Us

Social Value is not something that belongs to one team, one role, or one department. It is a shared responsibility and everyone should have a stake in creating it.

Every day, construction projects create opportunities to make a difference. The challenge, however, is ensuring we take the time to recognise those opportunities and turn them into meaningful action.

Social value is built through the moments that happen alongside our projects — supporting someone into employment, helping a young person discover a career in construction, working with local communities, developing skills, supporting wellbeing, or making choices that create a more sustainable future.

These actions may look different from project to project, but they all have one thing in common: they are driven by people choosing to make a positive contribution. It is important to plan early and take the time to ensure these opportunities are not overlooked.

The Power of Partnership

The most successful projects are built through collaboration. They rely on the collective effort of our employees, clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and community partners. And exactly the same is true for social value.

Creating positive change is not the responsibility of a single person or team. It comes from everyone understanding the role they can play and recognising that even small actions can have a lasting impact.

Social value is often viewed through targets, measurements, and reporting — and while these are important to ensure real outcomes have been created, the real impact is often found in the people and communities behind the numbers.

  • Behind every training opportunity is a person gaining confidence.
  • Behind every community conversation is a group of people feeling seen.
  • Behind every wellbeing conversation is a colleague who feels supported.

Our Social Value Week is not about creating a one-off moment. It is about reinforcing something that should be part of how we work every day. It is an opportunity to share stories, recognise contributions, and inspire new ideas. It is a chance to learn from each other, integrate with our local communities more and strengthen the positive impact we can create together.
