We were tasked with transforming an existing workshop in a Category B listed building into a state-of-the-art research and teaching lab. This involved creating a new robotics lab, laser area and mobile lab. To safely accommodate the weight of the robotic machines, we dug out the existing floor and infilled it with reinforced concrete strong enough to bear the weights involved.
Additional remodelling work included installing structural steel to create a mezzanine office space and viewing gallery, and the installation of a full new Bauder roofing system with roof lights. The project also involved extensive M&E service installations including new ventilation and AHU, fire alarms, fume extract, compressed air, smoke detection systems, small power data, controls, and distribution boards.
Works include
Full Bauder roofing system • Light installation • Flooring • Remodelling the mezzanine and viewing gallery • M&E • Joinery • Decoration and finishing
“It was Morris & Spottiswood’s innovative approach and willingness to develop solutions and work closely with both the client project team and key supply chain partners that made for the successful completion of the project. Post completion feedback from the client project manager is that the new facility has been a huge success both for end users and for senior executive who frequently use the lab to showcase the University’s cutting-edge research and development facilities.”
Ian Jones, Project Manager, Estates Service
To create a welcoming and comfortable space, the final works included the installation of new partitions, ceilings, doors, and windows, as well as working on wall finishes, joinery, and decoration. All work was completed to the highest standard and has been well-received by the client and the students.
