We worked closely with other supply chain partners on this project to deliver internal and external upgrades at the Applied Shipbuilding Academy at BAE Systems’ Scotstoun shipyard. By providing bespoke training to almost 4,500 employees and 700 apprentices, the Shipbuilding Academy will ensure that the Scottish shipbuilding industry has a strong and thriving workforce for generations to come.
The project included the internal refurbishment and landscaping of a historic industrial building to create the Modern Trade Hall, which houses a high quality, fully immersive, hands-on training environment. This involved creating spaces dedicated to different elements of shipbuilding, with the finished project incorporating workshops, welding booths, teaching spaces, research and technology facilities, and realistic ship mock-up environments. To create these spaces, the internal fit-out involved constructing a new building within the existing steel frame structure, as well as extensive M&E installations.
Works include
Flooring Services • M&E • Construction • Landscaping
Externally, the project included £1m of landscaping, incorporating a 30m long living wall and décor which reflected the yard’s unique history and heritage. A repurposed 2.5-ton anchor evokes the work of past generations of shipbuilders and BAE’s place within the industry. Public seating throughout the space adds a feeling of community, allowing students, teachers, and passers-by the chance to relax and enjoy the space. To complete the project, we donated soil and flowering plants to fill the planters which were designed and built by the apprentices.
